Sandy Hook Real Estate for Sale – Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida 34242

Sandy Hook

The Sandy Hook community is a private enclave composed of 42 single family homes nestled amid lush, mature tropical trees at the northwestern side of Siesta Key, just off Ocean Blvd. It is closely intertwined with the pioneering efforts to fully develop the barrier island as a prime location for luxury Sarasota homes for sale. Sandy Hook’s development, at the same time, is deeply linked too to helping bring the Sarasota School of Architecture into its full blossom.

This is but to be expected, as its developer and namesake, Mary Rockwell Hook, was herself a pioneering lady architect, actively practicing in a male-dominated profession. Notably, Mary was on record as the only second woman to complete the prestigious architectural program at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. One lasting legacy she left in Sarasota was her development plans which put emphasis on innovative architectural designs in harmony with the natural setting.

Early showcases on innovation

Sandy Hook

The Sandy Hook development is part of the 55 acres that Mary, a Kansas City native, purchased sometime in the 1930s. Her purchase also included nearby Whispering Sands and Sandy Cove where a condominium complex now stands.

Besides Mary’s designs, Sandy Hook also served as a fertile ground for Sarasota School of Architects including Paul Rudolph, Victor Lundy, Tim Seibert, and Ralph Twitchell. At Whispering Sands, Mary designed an inn and a cluster of cottages for artists and writers, a colony for creative minds so impressive that it drew a visit from Eleanor Roosevelt. Ahead of her time and true to her nature-based designs, Mary employed solar power to supply her inn with hot water.

It was in the early 1950s after selling Whispering Sands when the lady architect put her innovative designs to work in earnest at Sandy Hook. She herself designed the first two homes in the community, while the third was by Rudolph, now widely recognized as one of the pillars of Sarasota School of Architecture. For her own residence, Mary designed an octagon-shaped home in the Sandy Hook neighborhood.

Prime location

Sandy Hook

Today, this community counts among the premier destinations for luxury waterfront Sarasota homes for sale where properties have asking prices in the million-dollar level. A choice gulf front residence here with three bedrooms and a floor area of nearly 3,800 square feet will typically be in the market with a tag price at close to the $2-million mark.

A marvelous private beach with pristine white sands iconic of Siesta Key constitutes another winning point for luxury Sarasota homes located at Sandy Hook. Besides its attraction as a neighborhood completely in sync with its natural surroundings, the community also benefits much from its convenient location. Sandy Hook is only walking distance away from the quaint shops and restaurants at the Siesta Key Village and a short drive to the life and leisure delights at downtown Sarasota.
