DeSoto Acres was developed starting in the 1920s, making it the oldest community outside of Sarasota’s city limits. It covers more than 850 acres spreading on the southeast corner of North Washington Boulevard (U.S. 301) with its eastern boundary defined by North Lockwood Ridge Road. Much of DeSoto Acres’ southern periphery on 47th Street abuts the greens and fairways of the Rolling Green Golf Club. This historic golf club is notably one of the landmarks helping define the prime choices in the Sarasota real estate market.

The DeSoto Acres property was originally called Van Dame Estates, named after its founder William Van Dame, a Chicago businessman who settled permanently in Sarasota in 1923. The name of the community was changed to DeSoto Acres after the county re-platted its acreage in 1945.

DeSoto Acres was set at a minimum of one-house per two acres, making it the largest Low-Density Residential area (RE-1) in Sarasota County. The community’s growth from its inception to the 1940s came slowly. Market interest in DeSoto Acres homes for sale picked up only in the 1950s and the 1960s, with a majority of the community’s residences built during those years.

DeSoto Acres still has some vintage homes tracing back to the mid-1920s. There are some new builds too, with the most recent home construction in the community finished in 2018.

The rustic charm of DeSoto Acres is amplified further in the kaleidoscope of its homes’ architectural designs. This community has a total of more than 350 residences which come in a variety of styles. A Walmart Supercenter and a Publix Super Market, along with several restaurants, are just across DeSoto Acres at the northwest junction of University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road. Only about 3 miles east of this intersection, more choices of shopping and dining are easily accessible at the Mall at University Town Center.
