Sarasota Memorial Forges Stronger Health Infrastructure


 

SARASOTA, FLORIDA, November 28th, 2016 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) continues to provide a strong boost to the local health care infrastructure, undoubtedly one of the pillars supporting the economy in the Suncoast including its real estate sector.

Shortly after receiving two major medical industry citations recently, SMH announced this November that it is pushing forward plans to establish a premier cancer specialty center comparable with similar world-class facilities in Tampa and Gainesville.

The announcement about the new center came on the heels of SMH having been named as one of the 50 best heart hospitals in the U.S. It was the only Suncoast hospital included in this 2017 list compiled by Truven Health Analytics.

This ranking was based on how well U.S. hospitals over a five-year span, from 2011 to 2015, took care of Medicare patients with heart conditions. The Truven study showed that had all U.S. hospitals performed at the level of SMH and others in the top 50 list, over 9,000 lives would have been saved and more than 6,000 heart patients would have been free of complications.

SMH Rates Five Stars

Also this year, SMH emerged among just 2 percent of U.S. hospitals, and the only one in Florida, to have received the highest five-star rating for safety and quality from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid.

Two other hospital rating organizations, U.S. News & World Report and HealthGrades, have also consistently recognized SMH among the best hospitals in the country for multiple specialties. A national Leapfrog safety study likewise gave the hospital recently an “A” for patient safety and top ranking among America’s safest hospitals.

Comprehensive Center Coverage

Much could be expected from the planned SMH cancer center when it is completed in three to four years. It will offer several specialty treatment programs including for breast, gastrointestinal, gynecology, colorectal and lung cancers. Prostate, melanoma, neuro-oncology, genitourinary gastric ulcers, and hematologic subspecialties would be covered as well.

Plans call for building the cancer center on or near the main SMH campus at 1700 South Tamiami Trail. The center’s preferred location is off Waldemere Street, which notably extends to Arlington Park, one of the favored destinations in searches of Sarasota homes for sale. In this community, several pre-construction homes are rising in one of its neighborhoods, La Linda Terrace.

Facility Opening in Newtown

Recent SMH initiatives have also extended to Sarasota’s Newtown district where it broke ground this November for a medical office expected to open in July 2017. Designated as the Sarasota Memorial Internal Medicine—it will offer comprehensive care and accessible services to patients over age 18 coordinated.

Its staff will consist of resident doctors whose training falls under the direct supervision of board-certified and experienced internal medicine physicians. These medical supervisors are faculty members of the Florida State University College of Medicine which maintains a satellite campus in Sarasota. Initially, 13 doctors will be fielded in the Newtown facility with an additional 13 added each year till a full manning complement of 39 doctors is reached.

As in the main hospital campus, most commercial insurance policies, including Medicaid and Medicare will be accepted in the Newtown SMH facility. Sarasota Memorial also provides its local communities with affordable health care through free and discounted care to underinsured and uninsured patients.
