Sarasota Region Bats for 100% Green Energy Use

SARASOTA, FLORIDA, July 12, 2017 – Expect green standards to become a weightier factor amongst Sarasota homes for sale in the years ahead. This June, the members of the Sarasota City Commission in a resolution voted unanimously to support a community-wide campaign towards having 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2045.

In a related development, the Florida Green Building Coalition awarded its highest “platinum” recognition to Manatee County for its programs and projects in conservation and sustainability.

The green certification is granted by this professional group to governments, homes and commercial buildings which meet its standards of energy saving and conservation. Manatee is notably the first county that the coalition has certified as platinum, having received its initial green certification in 2011 which leveled up to the gold standard in 2014.

Sarasota, meanwhile, is the third Florida city to have embraced the nationwide crusade for clean energy which is spearheaded by the Sierra Club under its “Ready for 100” campaign. St. Petersburg and Orlando have earlier expressed similar support for this initiative. The Sarasota Climate Justice Coalition is the local advocate for the campaign which under the commission-approved resolution also sets a 2030 goal for the transition of municipal operations to 100 percent clean energy.

Significantly, residential communities too are within the loop of the drive for expanded energy-efficiency in the two counties. Also this June, the US Green Building Council awarded its platinum certification on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to the first 70 homes built and occupied in the Mirabella at Village Green in Bradenton.

LEED is the most reputable third-party verification for green buildings and uses five measures for its certification. This green design criteria include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.
