Lido Shores is one of the more established and prestigious communities in Sarasota. It was developed over six decades ago as a fertile ground for the climate-sensitive modernism of the Sarasota School of Architecture. This neighborhood still retains today some Sarasota homes which are vivid showcases of this regional architectural style pioneered by Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph, two prominent local architects in the 1940s and 1950s.

Their designs constitute a flawless fusion of the new materials available at the time and those which are native to Florida. Besides cypress, plate glass and terrazzo floors, the trademarks of the Sarasota architectural genre also include 14-foot ceilings, sliding louvered walls, roof overhangs, breezeways and shutters to provide ventilation in the local subtropical climate. These residential features combine for an airy spaciousness minimizing the boundary between a home’s interiors and the outside. This design is truly suited for the magnificent views of the Sarasota Bay and Gulf of Mexico so generously provided at the Lido Shores community.

Eclectic neighborhood

In more recent years, some of the smaller, early modernist houses at Lido Shores were knocked down to give way for luxurious Mediterranean revival-style villas. The community also became a domain of residences built by Clifford M. Scholz, award-winning architect and president of one of Florida’s leading architectural firms, CMSA. Scholz’s home designs at Lido Shores subscribe to the Palladian architectural style popular in Europe and largely influenced by the classical temple architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome.

Notwithstanding such incursions, the modernist architectural tradition in the Lido Key community has persisted. Prominent local architects, like Guy Peterson and Jonathan Parks, designed new houses in the neighborhood and restored some of the original Sarasota School homes.

As a result, Lido Shores is now a unique conglomerate of luxury residences in old and new architectural styles. Many of these elegant homes are located in the community’s Westway Drive which quite fittingly earned the moniker “Beverly Hills of Sarasota.”

Million-dollar choices

An alert agent, however, would be a prerequisite in landing a deal on Lido shores homes for sale. The inventory of available properties in this community is relatively thinner compared to the newer developments with a richer collection of Sarasota homes for sale.

The listings of Lido Shores homes for sale typically consists of residences built between the 1950s and 2014 with floor plans ranging from about 1,900 square feet up to nearly 8,000 square feet. Their prices are in the $1.1 million–$6.5 million range.

Diverse neighborhood experience

The amenities available to residents of Lido Shores include deeded private access to Lido Key’s white-sand beach and use of the community’s gazebo. Also, there’s gated access and plenty of spaces for vehicle parking including boat trailers. The beach and the nearby New Pass Fishing Pier are popular spots for fishing. Likewise nearby are the Mote Marine Aquarium and the half-mile Sarasota Bay Walk, a nature trail passing through lush mangroves.

Besides its natural beauty, the community’s location at the northern tip of Lido Key also offers convenient access to the chic shops and dining venues of St. Armands Circle and the golf links at Longboat Key. Additionally, Sarasota’s downtown and its theaters, art galleries, and restaurants are only some 10 minutes’ drive from this fascinating community.
