McClellan Park is a 56-acre community located just a few miles south of the Sarasota downtown. Platted way back in 1913, it was established in 1916 by the McClellan Sisters, Daisietta and Katherine, who promoted their development as the “Garden Spot.”

The community was designed by landscape architects who ensured that roadways curved over the gentle slope of the land and each lot offers a view of the bay. Shell aggregates were used as road paving material, and some of these can still be seen today in the community’s curbs and gutters. The original shell-covered roads were lined with paved sidewalks, flowering shrubs and shade trees, many of which too have remained up to today.

Mix of old and new homes

McClellan Park started its full bloom as a residential community during the 1920s when its locality, then called Sarasota Heights, was annexed into the city proper. In more recent years, it became one of the prized “West of the Trail” communities, so designated because of their location west of the South Tamiami Trail, hugging the eastern coastline of Sarasota Bay.

The historic character and old-Florida ambience remain evident in most of these West of the Trail neighborhoods. At McClellan Park, prospective buyers of Sarasota homes for sale will find a charming mix of new and old residences. Competing for attention from visitors are charming cottages, modern houses with contemporary architectural style and waterfront homes of yesteryear vintage.

This neighborhood also captivates with its winding streets and sidewalks lined with decades-old oaks and Indian midden shell aggregates. The Native American influence is evident in the street names of McClellan Park, i.e., Mietaw, Seminole, Cherokee and Wewa. As endearing too is the McClellan Park School building that the McClellan sisters themselves had ordered built over an ancient Indian mound.

Superb neighborhood amenities

Unfortunately, this school was closed some years ago and the property is now vacant and awaiting development. The popular Southside Elementary School, nonetheless, is a short distance south of McClellan Park to serve the needs of its resident families with schooling kids. Besides this school, the neighboring Southside Village also hosts the 806-bed Sarasota Memorial Hospital renowned worldwide for its excellent facilities and the expertise of medical professionals in various fields.

Moreover, various venues for shopping and dining are likewise a short distance south of McClellan Park. Among these are the Publix Supermarket at Paradise Plaza and the Westfield Southgate anchored by Macy’s, Dillard’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Moving a bit north of the community offers even more alternatives in and around Southside Village along the Tamiami Trail, among which are Morton’s Gourmet Market, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Michael’s On East noted for its wine cellar and authentic Chilean cuisine.
