The Sanderling Club on Siesta Key is one of the pioneer communities south of the barrier island’s Point of Rocks. Its development was started in 1946 by the then newly formed Siesta Properties. Its projects stressed on ecological preservation and maintaining a park-like residential setting in order to draw potential buyers of luxury Sarasota homes for sale.

The company’s founder, Elbridge S. Boyd of Atlanta, was also behind the development of Turtle Beach Cabana Club, Hidden Harbor, Cocoanut Bayou and Cedar Park Circle, all in Siesta Key. Topnotch clubhouse facilities

An earlier natural catastrophe — a devastating hurricane in 1921 — contributed much in shaping the Sanderling area into a tropical oasis for wintering residents from the northern U.S. The hurricane’s sustained 140 mph winds sealed off an old pass into Sarasota Bay, creating the Heron Lagoon which is now one of the features which endear Sanderling to searchers of Sarasota homes for sale.

In 1952, construction was started on the twenty-five Gulf front cabanas just north of the lagoon as part of the amenities for the Sanderling clubhouse. Designed by architect Paul Rudolph, prime mover of the renowned Sarasota School of Architecture, these cabanas still remain today as part of the community’s clubhouse and common facilities.

The Sanderling Club also has three tennis courts and a children’s playground. Its clubhouse features a spacious patio and barbecue area for community socials and simply enjoying the well-preserved natural beauty around Sanderling. A private fifteen-boat marina sheltered off Little Sarasota Bay, just south of the Stickney Point Bridge, is also accessible to club members.

Prime residential choices

Siesta Properties developed Sanderling as a residential community of single family homes. The only gated Gulf front community in Sarasota, this neighborhood exudes an aesthetic feel which most buyers look for in their search for luxury Sarasota homes for sale.

The prices of available properties at Sanderling typically start at the high $900s and top off at around the $11-million mark. Buyers of luxury Sarasota homes can still find some residences in this community which were built during Sanderling’s early development in the 1940s. Nearby amenities at the Sarasota mainland more than adequately complement the Siesta Key beach attractions which boost home values in Sanderling. Crossing Stickney Point Bridge, just a mile north of the community leads to the Gulf Gate Village which teems with dining venues, shops and service providers. A Publix Super Market and Pharmacy at the Sarasota Pavilion Shopping Center is also within this locality for added convenience to the Sanderling residents.
