Fishermens Bay is a high-end Sarasota community located in Vamo, a census-designated place (CDP) in South Sarasota. A gated enclave, this neighborhood can match the charm of Sarasota homes for sale in the strip of prime real estate called “West of the Trail” south of downtown.

Like the homes in those neighborhoods to the north, Fishermens Bay’s residences are also next to the waters of Little Sarasota Bay and west of the vital Tamiami Trail corridor. This community’s perimeter is defined north by Wharf Road, where its gate is, and south by Vamo Drive where the establishment of the Vamo CDP essentially began.

Historic Roots

Two developers native to Virginia and Missouri decided during the early 1920s to cash in on the Florida land boom in that decade via purchase of part of the estate of Bertha Palmer. They named their planned community Vamo, lifting it from the name abbreviations of their respective states.

To jumpstart their project, 13 residences were constructed along the stretch of Vamo Drive, and the Vamo community was promoted nationally as “The Gem of Sarasota Bay.” But with the Florida real estate fortunes fizzling out later in the twenties, Vamo’s development as a residential community didn’t take off fully. It instead turned into primarily a commercial fishing village.

Rebirth from the Fifties

The parcels for Fishermen’s Bay homes for sale were eventually platted near this former fishing camp when developers again took interest in Vamo properties starting from the 1950s. The renewed development in the Vamo CDP likewise led to the eventual opening of Tropical Shores, also a bayfront subdivision, and Pelican Cove, a Sarasota bedroom community.

Both of these neighborhoods are north of Fishermens Bay, an area where the Westfield Sarasota Square mall was also built following the resurgence of home construction not only in Vamo but also in Palmer Ranch east of this CDP.

Fishermen’s Bay has been platted for just 20 home sites, the choice lots of which are located directly bayfront. A single, cul-de-sac street, Fishermen’s Bay Drive lined with lush trees, serves the community. Deeded boat slips in the property’s private marina and fishing pier on the north end of the community are bundled with purchases of Fishermen’s Bay homes for sale.

Fishermen’s Bay homes for sale occupy oversized lots of up to an acre profuse with lush, shady trees. Estate homes directly on the bayfront are typically priced at over $1 million, and the price quotes can ease in the $400s‒$900s range for residences off the water. Key West-style residences dominate the architectural style in this community, with these builds’ floor plans in the 3,000-square-foot range designed with three to four bedrooms.

Interest in Fishermen’s Bay homes for sale is driven not only by the community’s waterfront character. The nearby Tamiami Trail facilitates easy access to many of Sarasota’s points of interest, including commercial hubs as well as sports clubs and leisure centers. One notable destination just minutes away is The Oaks Club where a membership provides many delightful privileges such as golf and tennis, plus socials and fine dining.
