Bayview Heights Homes for Sale

Bay View Heights is a historic neighborhood. Local historians say it’s in fact the oldest in Sarasota. Homes for sale in this community, however, not only derive market appeal from Bay View Heights’ historical pedigree. These residences also attract prospective buyers because of their community’s outstanding location off Sarasota Bay on a site directly off South Osprey Avenue west of the Tamiami Trail.

Two prestigious neighborhoods flank Bayview Heights: McClelland Park to the north and Cherokee Park to the south. A pair of roads open access to Bayview Heights’ homes for sale—Bay View Drive and Harmony Lane—the latter street’s name engraved on a prominent stone wall marking the Cherokee Park frontage.

Underscoring the elevation that Bay View Heights enjoy, both of its access roads slope down onward Sarasota Bay. The residents of the community enjoy a refreshing setting largely provided by the lush tree canopies and the well-trimmed shrubbery and hedges along Bay View Heights’ internal streets.

A Past Vividly Preserved

The neighborhood is quiet, as its streets have no through traffic. Quite charming, too, Colony Terrace, one of the community’s side streets, is still paved by its original bricks.

There is no homeowners’ association in Bay View Heights, but just the same, its residences exude a superior curb appeal.

Bay View Heights’ area was first settled in the early 1870s, with a citrus grower, Richard Cunliff, as one of the community’s pioneers. Cunliff Lane, the street marking the northern boundary of Bay View Heights was named after him. Cunliff Lane is notably on record as the first main street of the area then known as Sara Sota.

Cunliff’s residence, a Nantucket style, two-story home built in 1874 at 2525 Pleasant Place, is still in use, and its owner has the bragging right as living in Sarasota’s oldest home. Called the Bay View Cottage, this residence was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

An ancient tree festooned with moss in the cottage’s front yard serves as immediate notice of just how old this house is. Entering its large porch takes you far back to yesteryears with the home retaining its original oak flooring and cypress shingles.
