Tropical Shores is one of the neighborhoods carved out of the historic census designated place (CDP) of Vamo in south Sarasota County. Located just north of Osprey, this CDP also includes the bedroom community of Pelican Cove and the gated enclave of Fishermen’s Bay. All of these neighborhoods share much of the character of the prestigious West of the Trail properties south of downtown Sarasota.

Why Vamo?

As early as the 1920s, two developers—Bessie P. Gibson, of Virginia, and A.A. Wren, of Missouri— already saw the potential of this location. They bought the land for Vamo from the estate of Sarasota pioneer and socialite Bertha Palmer. Spreading west of Palmer Ranch, the acreage purchased was named Vamo, combining the abbreviations of the developers’ respective states of origin.

Gibson and Wren, however, were able to build just 13 homes, and for decades, Vamo was largely undeveloped and became more known as a base for commercial fishing. Beginning in the 1950s, development picked up anew with the establishment of Tropical Shores and its neighboring communities Fishermen’s Bay and Pelican Cove. The northernmost part of Vamo was likewise sold, paving the way for the development of the Westfield Sarasota Square mall north of the CDP.

Marina and High-end Homes

A boating lifestyle sure is part of the market appeal of Tropical Shores homes for sale. The community has a private marina and clubhouse, the membership of which is optional. There is a small public park south of the community—the Vamo Drive Park—which provides a canoe/kayak launch to Little Sarasota Bay as well as parking space.

The prime choices of residences in Tropical Shores are those located bayfront along the stretch of Dunmore Drive. Listings in the MLS of Sarasota homes for sale on this corridor are typically priced from the high $800s up to over $1 million. These dwellings feature floor spaces between 1,850 and 2,850 square feet in three-bedroom layouts.

Easier Inland Picks

Living close to the bay minus the hefty price is a selling point for Tropical Shores homes for sale on inland sites. Typical pricing of these residences is quoted in the $200s‒$300s range for floor spaces measuring from 970 to 1,750 square feet designed with two to three bedrooms.

There are no HOA fees in Tropical Shores which has drawn a rich mix of residents, but still with a good number of Sarasota old-timers. Opting to stay in this community for good isn’t a hard decision to make. Tropical Shores is close to many of the life and leisure attractions in Sarasota, including the commercial hubs of Westfield Sarasota Square and Pelican Plaza, just a short distance from the community.

Moving to Tropical Shores is likewise an ideal path to take for families. The community is served by some of the best schools in the region, such as Gulfgate Elementary, Brookside Middle, and Riverview High.
